It’s difficult to fully express my gratitude for the incredible care Dr. Haile’ provided. I am in my late 40’s and have had hip pain for many years. In the last few years, its been debilitating at times which has impacted my once active lifestyle. I would fight through playing soccer with my son or other activities - but my limp and pain was becoming very evident.
Dr. Haile was the 4th doctor I consulted. All of which advised me that I needed a total hip replacement. The other three surgeons were very qualified and I’m sure very capable. I just wasn’t ready or there were timing issues that prevented me from going forward with them.
Moreover, after my fairly extensive research I really wanted a surgeon who was highly experienced at performing my total hip replacement through the Direct Anterior Approach. While not a physician and certainly not qualified to provide others advice on the matter – I felt that the Direct Anterior Approach made sense (at least for me) due to the avoidance of cutting through muscle to complete the hip replacement. Others I have spoken with have gone with the more traditional lateral approach and had good results as well.
Dr. Haile was amazing. During our first meeting, he thoroughly reviewed my history and helped me understand my options. He was not trying to push me into surgery and took the time to really ensure I understood my options and set my long/short term expectations. Fully confident in what I heard from Dr. Haile and two other patients who had the same procedure done by him – I was ready to get it done!
Fast forward to the day of surgery, Dr. Haile and I said a prayer together before surgery and he was able to complete procedure in under an hour. I agreed to go with a spinal block versus general anesthesia which was a great experience and an outstanding suggestion by Dr. Haile. When the procedure was done, I felt NO pain and was not experiencing any side effects common with general anesthesia.
Within a few hours (maybe less) I was walking at least a hundred feet or so. I was actually discharged the same day to my home. Still NO pain.
After the spinal block wore off, I felt a slight but of discomfort – but far - far less than I expected and actually less than what I experiencing daily before the surgery.
I used my walker for about 11 days. I progressed to a cane for another 3 days and thereafter was able to walk around without any assistive devices. I have done no formal PT, but have done the recommended exercises. I am currently at 6 weeks post-surgery and walk better than I have in 2+ years. I feel NO pain. During the entire process the most pain meds I have had to use is a medium dose of ibuprofen. I was able to shower almost immediately after surgery due to the choice of waterproof bandage Dr. Haile used (a bigger deal than you may think).
It’s literally 6 weeks to the day since the procedure and my life has completely changed. Dr. Haile gave me back my mobility and made me feel young again. I currently walk 2 miles a day as part of my rehab (NO pain!) and walk with no embarrassing limp for the first time in 3 maybe 4 years. Dr. Haile is the real deal. He’s a great person and a remarkable surgeon. I recommend him to anyone who is in need of a total hip replacement (I hear he's outstanding with knee replacements too but thankfully I don't need that yet). Thank you Dr. Haile!!
